Muskogee Regional Cancer Center
A leader in the fight against cancer, Muskogee Regional Medical Center began its commitment to fight cancer in 1976 with the opening of a Cobalt Therapy Unit. As cancer treatment progressed, MRMC added a chemotherapy unit in 1980, and in 1988 combined and expanded its cancer treatment services, opening Muskogee Regional Cancer Center, a state-of-the-art outpatient treatment facility.
The Center is easily accessible with its own entrance and adjacent parking area, yet has the advantage of being connected directly to Muskogee Regional Medical Center. The center follows national standards set by the American College of Surgeons, and is certified by that group as a Community Hospital Cancer Program.
Muskogee Regional Cancer Center is approved to participate in active and ongoing cancer research programs and trials, which provides our physicians access to the broadest range of treatment medications. The Center offers the most current, comprehensive cancer treatment available, providing our patients with the best care possible from Board Certified physicians, nurses and technical personnel. Advances in medicine and technology continuously provide the Center with new tools for diagnosing and treating cancer. Combining these technological advances with skilled, caring practitioners and a strong support system, keeps Muskogee Regional Cancer Center a leader in the fight against cancer.
Radiation Oncology
The Radiation Oncology Unit at Muskogee Regional Cancer Center is staffed by three full-time, Board Certified Radiation Oncologists comprising Radiation Oncology of Muskogee, PLLC. The unit utilizes a Varian 23EX and Varian 6EX Linear Accelerator which use high energy photon or electron beams to treat specific cancers. When used with our three-dimensional planning (also known as conformal treatment), it provides the most precise localization of radiation to cancerous tissues. One of the main benefits of this treatment is the accurate planning involved, allowing a higher percentage of normal healthy tissue to be protected during radiation treatment, and allowing more precise concentration of radiation on the tumor itself.
Muskogee Regional Cancer Center was one of the first in the state to offer Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). This treatment takes normal tissue sparing to a whole new level utilizing a higher number of treatment fields and shifting field techniques. This is the treatment of choice when malignancies are near sensitive structures such as the spinal cord or kidneys. IMRT therapy is quickly becoming the standard in radiation therapy and has been in use at MRMC since 2004.
Medical Oncology
Chemotherapy services are administered in the Medical Oncology Unit of the Center by oncologists and hematologists from Oklahoma Oncology. Since this medical group's formation in 1969, Oklahoma Oncology has become a statewide network, and is currently staffed by three Board Certified Medical Oncologists. In Medical Oncology, a patient may receive a chemotherapy treatment while relaxing in a comfortable recliner or in the privacy of an infusion room. The Medical Oncology department participates in national clinical trial organizations such as ECOG, SWOG and NSABP.
Cancer Support
Cancer treatment is often lengthy and emotionally as well as physically demanding for patients and their families. A variety of support services are incorporated into Muskogee Regional Cancer Center to assist our patients with a wide range of special needs. For the convenience of our patients, social workers are available on-site to provide counseling, support groups, referral to community agencies and educational materials. The Center works in conjunction with the American Cancer Society to provide the highly-acclaimed "I Can Cope" and "Look Good, Feel Better" programs. Nutritional consultation, laboratory and radiology services are also available at the Center.
Cancer Registry
The MRMC Cancer Registry collects, manages and analyzes information on patients diagnosed with cancer and/or treated at Muskogee Regional Cancer Center. The Registry was established in 1979 and, since that time, has collected information on thousands of cases. Data collected and compiled includes information on demographics, medical history, diagnostic findings, treatment and follow-up. The registry is an important source of information for cancer research and education. All information collected is strictly confidential and is used for statistical purposes only. No personal patient information is released. The registry also coordinates weekly cancer conferences which provide an opportunity for a multi-specialty panel of physicians and other health professionals to exchange information regarding particular cancer cases.
Muskogee Regional Medical Center Cardiology Services
Over the last decade, numerous advances have been made in the area of Cardiology services offered at Muskogee Regional Medical Center. With increased emphasis placed on non-invasive cardiology procedures, and with imaging techniques done on an outpatient basis, the medical center uses some of the latest technology in the evaluation and treatment of patients with heart disease, while providing personal, compassionate care.
Services provided at MRMC include EKG, cardiac ultrasound, stress testing, nuclear scanning of the heart and holter monitoring for the evaluation of heart rhythms, pacemaker insertion and our newest service, transesophageal endoscopy, an internal echocardiograph procedure.
Cardiac catheterization is a diagnostic procedure available at MRMC used to examine the blood vessels of the heart. It allows the cardiologist to assess the pumping function of the heart and to examine the coronary arteries. By combining the information obtained during this procedure with information from other diagnostic tests, the cardiologist is able to accurately diagnose problems that may exist, and to choose the most effective treatment.
MRMC also houses a Chest Pain Evaluation Unit, where low-risk cardiac patients can be evaluated and observed promptly and efficiently. Patients at cardiac risk throughout MRMC are also monitored by telemetry units.
Cardiologists on MRMC's Medical Staff have been continuously involved in national as well as international landmark studies conducted to compare various medications in the effectiveness of treatment on cardiac patients. In addition, the medical center is periodically involved in Health Care Quality Improvement Projects, statewide cardiology studies sponsored by the Oklahoma Foundation for Medical Quality.
MRMC has experts available through its Speakers' Bureau to comment on a variety of topics and services at your next meeting or educational event. The medical center also offers cardiac dietary consultation, which is provided to patients upon physician referral.
Muskogee Regional Medical Center Clinical Services
The clinical-ancillary staff at Muskogee Regional Medical Center includes the departments of Electrodiagnostics, Laboratory, Radiology and Respiratory Services. These departments offer a variety of diagnostic services to inpatients and outpatients 24 hours a day, seven days a week. MRMC's clinical staff aids physicians in the diagnosis and care of our patients and interact with practically all other departments in the medical center.
MRMC's clinical employees are highly-skilled and dedicated to providing quality patient care. They consistently strive to improve patient care by introducing new tests, procedures and equipment that have the potential of providing the patient with a reduced hospital stay, consequently reducing health care costs both for the patient and for MRMC. All of these departments are highly technical, utilizing state-of-the-art equipment and techniques. The scientific advances of the past two decades have enabled us to diagnose disease sooner, intervene more quickly and treat patients more successfully than we ever imagined possible.
Electrodiagnostics
Electrodiagnostics is responsible for performing non-invasive testing procedures such as electrocardiograms (EKG), stress tests, holter EKG monitors, electroencephalograms (EEG), holter EEG, electromyelograms, evoked potential exams, echocardiograms and cardiac doppler exams. These procedures are performed primarily to assist physicians in the diagnosis of disorders of the heart, brain and nervous system. The Electrodiagnostics staff consists of specially trained EEG/EMG technicians, echocardiograph technologists and EKG technicians.
Radiology
MRMC's Radiology Department uses medical radiation and diagnostic imaging techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The Department provides services in Cardiac Catheterization, Diagnostic Radiology, CT Scanning, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The Department works with the most advanced technology available allowing the early diagnosis of many diseases and disorders without surgical procedures.
The Department recently purchased a new CT Scanner, offering the advantages of this new piece of equipment include three-dimensional capabilities and a significant increase in the speed of turnaround time -- a test which previously took 30 minutes now takes approximately two or three minutes. In addition, up to a third less injectable contrast material is needed for a procedure. Other recent advancements in the Department include state-of-the-art digital fluoroscopy and a new mammography unit.
The Department is staffed with Registered Radiologic Technologists and support personnel. The MRMC Radiology Department serves as the largest clinical training site for students of Bacone College's Radiologic Technology Program.
Laboratory
MRMC's Laboratory is staffed by personnel certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. The Lab is divided into five special sections, each of which deals with a different area of laboratory science: Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, Microbiology and Histology. Laboratory technology and equipment at MRMC are constantly changing as new advances are made in the science of Medical Technology. An example of a significant advancement in the Lab is the recent acquisition of a new immunostainer which is used to identify different types of cancer so that the most effective treatment can be administered.
The Tom S. Gafford School of Medical Technology was established at MRMC in 1958 and is now affiliated with eight Oklahoma universities. Students can fulfill requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology by completing one year of clinical internship at MRMC. The Laboratory has a staff of approximately 50 who work under the direction of medical staff Pathologists.
Respiratory Services
MRMC’s Respiratory Services Department aids in the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary (lung) disease. Respiratory care practitioners treat all age groups from infants to the elderly, performing such diagnostic procedures as arterial blood gas analysis, simple spirometry, and complete pulmonary function studies. In addition, registered and certified respiratory therapists provide therapeutic breathing treatments and ventilator assistance and management for the critically ill. Under physician direction, the department assists as an important team member in treating patients and helping them to recover, offering a variety of therapeutic services to inpatients and outpatients. Muskogee Regional Medical Center Emergency Services
Muskogee Regional Medical Center proudly opened the doors of its newly-renovated Emergency Department in December 1996, presenting a beautifully decorated, state-of-the-art facility to the Muskogee community. Over the last few years, the extensive planning and construction that went into the project have paid off, enabling MRMC to efficiently serve the thousands of patients who have come through its doors seeking emergency care.
The MRMC Emergency Department is a Level II Trauma Center with 21 treatment rooms, including three cardiac/trauma beds, and orthopedic room, a room for expectant mothers and one just for children. There is also a special hazardous materials area with its own entrance for patients who may be contaminated with a hazardous substance. The department is always open and staffed around the clock with doctors, nurses and support staff who are specialized in emergency care.
Upon arrival at the Emergency Department, patients are evaluated by a registered nurse who is trained in triage. Triage is a system of classifying patients on a priority basis so that those who are most critically ill will be cared for first. Because emergencies cannot be scheduled, there are times when a number of patients will be cared for at the same time. This may also increase waiting time, but rest assured that each patient is seen as quickly as possible. Two family members may wait in the Emergency Department with each patient. Other family members and visitors may wait in the Emergency Waiting Area, located next to the treatment area.
Upon discharge, patients are given a discharge instruction sheet. In addition, the emergency staff calls to check on many patients at home during the 24 hours following their Emergency Department visit. Of course, patients or family members are welcome to contact the department with any questions or problems.
Many times an illness or injury can be treated at your physician's office more effectively and less expensively than through the Emergency Department, which is set up to care for medical emergencies. If you are unsure whether or not you need immediate medical treatment, call your family doctor. This is especially important if you are insured by a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), most of which require authorization by your primary care physician for an emergency room visit.
There's never a convenient time to have an emergency, but if it does happen to you or a member of your family, it's nice to know that a quality facility such as the Emergency Department at Muskogee Regional Medical Center exists in your area, just in case.
Your comments and concerns are welcome. Please call the MRMC Emergency Department, Director of Patient Care Services at (918) 684-2381.
